It All Started With A Creative Bridesmaid...

This is the best idea ever for a Hens Night. One day a bridesmaid phoned and asked if I would do a special 'drawing a nude male' beginners art class? I thought 'why not?' We did it and we all had a ball. It was wonderful. That was in Cairns more than 20 years ago. Word of mouth meant that I was asked to conduct more Arty Party Hens Night activities. Eventually I moved to Sydney and it was quite a while before another creative bridesmaid came looking to do a bohemian hens night  with a male model. She had been told that I did that sort of thing. Now there are thousands of women who have come here to my bohemian studio to enjoy champagne, yummy nibbles and an entertaining and classy art class with a male nude model. While there have been others who have recreated the idea since, nobody does this with the panache of a Sydney Hens Night Arty Party. Would You Enjoy A Champagne?

We look after you with champagne at our Hens Nights.

An artist's studio without drinks is, well, not a real artist's studio. Our Sydney Hens Nights include champagne to keep the creative juices flowing. Some prefer half/half with orange juice or a soft drink or mineral water. At East Sydney Academy of Art we treat our guests in the way they deserve to be treated. In this unique environment you will feel very special indeed.

Yummy Hens Finger Food

We call it Bohemian Fare, it's the sort of nibbles that you would expect in a real artist's studio and we would not want to disappoint. It's hommus and avocado dips and salami and carrots and chocolates and lebanese bread and melon and Tim Tams and olives and water crackers and all manner of yummy temptations including our famous pavlova and fresh fruit salad. 

Just perfect as entrées before dinner at one of the more than 200 fine restaurants within 10 minutes walk of the studio or for your Ladies Lunch event.

Our Special Pavlova

Pavlova is central to every Arty Party in our studio. Deliciously decadent it is made fresh just before your arrival along with the salad made from seasonal fruits. Pavlova has always had a special relationship with the arts. It was originally created to honor the great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova when she toured Australia and New Zealand in the 1920's (click here for more info) and ever since it has been a bohemian tradition for pavlova to be served at artist's and performers celebrations.

Bohemian Supper Or Lunch Option

Many of our Arty Party groups take advantage of our yummy nibbles and consider them to be like a dessert. They order in hot food that can be delivered like gourmet pizzas or Thai or something like that and it makes for a delicious bohemian meal when combined with the nibbles and sweets already provided. This is a very cost effective way of planning an evening as it is much more affordable than going to a sit down meal at a restaurant, and besides, it just so happens to be great fun to do it this way. 

The Perfect Location

East Sydney Academy of Art is perfectly located, central to major transport hubs including public transport, it is easy to find just 3 minutes walk from the Coca Cola sign near Kings Cross. Most Hen's Party's book for 5 o'clock. That is excellent timing to go from your special drawing event to dinner at any one of the 200 restaurants within 10 minutes walk.

In The Heart Of Sydney's Entertainment District

Restaurants and party venues in this area vary from very exclusve 5 star establishments like Otto's or Salt to more casual yet excellent eateries like Venice Beach or Tharens, the hat place. Every taste and every budget is catered for in this premier restaurant district.

Clubs And Bars To Party Into The Night

Perhaps before your Hens Arty Party you might meet for cocktails at a place like Hugo's Lounge which is just a few minutes walk from here and specializes in drinks for hens. Then after your Arty Party there are enough Nightclubs and bars to satisfy the urge to party. Options range from quiet cocktail bars to the lively dance floor of the Trademark.

The Art Class

This is the class that everyone is talking about. Virtually all of these women are beginners. I guide them through a 6 step program that makes drawing the figure easy. Each time we have one of these groups the hens all go away amazed at how quickily they made a drawing that was not only fun to make, but actually looked like the model. The model of course is the traditional male life drawing model. At East Sydney Academy of Art you will be taught by myself, Tony Johansen. I have great experience at teaching beginners groups to draw the figure. Belly Dancing At Our Hens Arty Party

Belly dancing is a fun and exotic optional extra now available for our Arty Partys. In the East belly dancing was an important part of women only celebrations for centuries, and while the idea of a Hens Night is a fairly modern one, the inclusion of belly dancing is very fitting for todays world. The color and excitement of this beautiful dance follows the conclusion of the art class and is the perfect way to finish a wonderful event.

We have come a long way from the early days when the Hens Nights were something we did not seek or promote, but bridesmaids kept phoning us because they had heard about how much fun an Arty Party can be. For years we didn't advertise at all. But finally it dawned on us, it is a popular idea, and we should make a web site. Now days we have bookings as much as 6 months in advance, and more than one Hens Night every weekend.

Great Girls' Night Out Idea

Hen Nights give you a reason to do a themed party with your female friends but sometimes you don't need a reason to go out and enjoy the company of your best friends. The GNO, aka Girls Night Out is a perfect excuse to attend an Arty Party where you enjoy champagne and yummy nibbles with your friends and then are entertained by a male nude model and the fun of learning the basics of drawing in a fun and relaxing format perfectly suited to beginners (although advanced artists will also enjoy this classy smorgasbord of art, wine, and good company.)

Customize Your Hen Arty Party

While the standard Hens Arty Party or Girls' Night Out is the affordable option that is plenty enough fun for most groups we also offer various options that tailor your Sydney Arty Party to suit your individual needs and can even save you money.

Bohemian Supper Or Lunch

Pavlova, fruit salad, fine cheeses, dips, chocolates, and so on - it is the food already provided as part of the Arty Party but it can be considered as the perfect desert for those who might choose to order-in gourmet pizzas, Thai or other hot food that can be delivered. We have even had some groups from various cultures where the family make special treats and bring them with them. 

The cost of ordering-in food or bringing food is the responsibility of the hens group while the pavlova etc that we normally provide is included in the Arty Party price. Because ordering in food like this is normally considerably less that going to a restaurant for a full meal this option saves you money on your entire evening's entertainment. For the bohemian supper we extend the length of the Arty Party by a half hour at no extra charge. This popular option is a bonus service which we do to help our valued clients but it has the added benefit of being a really fun way to enjoy an Arty Party. This option is particularly suitable for afternoon or night Arty Parties.

Premium Champagne

Special champagnes can be ordered at extra cost per head which can range from very affordable Australian vintage sparkling wines to top of the line French vintage champagne's that are ever so decadent. Prices are quoted depending on the particular wine requested.

Belly Dancing

This popular option extends the event by a half hour with the belly dancing following the art class. There are 2 belly dancers who do a performance of the best of their art before inviting all present to join them in a circle and everyone joins in the dancing. Belly dancing originated as a women's dance performed for women's celebrations and so it is very appropriate for a Hens Night or Girls' Night Out

The French Connection

Bon appétit with baguettes, French cheeses, French wine, Edith Piaff, and bonhomie. A touch of French style goes perfectly with the bohemian nature of the studio.  Priced individually according to the particular wine requested.

Ladies Lunches

For those who prefer not to party at night we offer our Arty Party event for lunch times on a Saturday or Sunday. You are invited to the exotic bohemian studio of Tony Johansen. You will discover celebrity portraits from past Archibald competitions and all the colorful creations of a working professional artist's studio. You will drink champagne and enjoy our bohemian finger food - things like our famous pavlova, fruit salad, lebanese bread and dips and salami sticks and chocolates and fine cheeses. It is perfect for light browsing, although if you prefer a more substantial offering we recommend you order-in gourmet pizzas or other delicious foods to suit your individual needs.

Once you relax we start the art class. It is a beginners art class in how to draw the male nude under thentertaining guidance of Tony Johansen who has the gift of making drawing seem easy. Soon you will surprise yourself with how much your drawings have improved and how much fun it is.

It all seems rather decadent, definitely classy, perhaps a  little naughty but very nice. An Arty Party Ladies Lunch is a delightful way to enjoy the company of good friends in a different and memorable way.
